What happened with deadend.ai?

What was deadend.ai?

deadend.ai was a smart 404 service, giving customers ability to index their content, and leverage multiple API functionalities as well as CMS integrations to level up their 404 pages.

Whenever customer updated their content / products they would be synced to deadend.ai and indexed. This gave deadend.ai the ability to provide relevant suggestions to users using search on customers’ websites, as well as to show semantic 404 pages.

Where deadend.ai was unique is replacing 404 pages in two ways, either in redirect mode automatically finding relevant products and taking the customer there instead of showing 404 page altogether, or showing a fully customizable 404 page with search functionality, product suggestions, and more.

With the rise of AI powered search, hallucinated links as well as common problem of ecommerce websites with outdated affiliate links, this was an immediate way to recover revenue and improve user experience.

Why did deadend.ai shutdown?

In January of 2026 shortly after the launch I’ve joined Google as SWE. After review for conflict of interest due to overlap with Google Search and services like Programmable Search Engine, I had to stop my involvement with the product. During the transition period we tried to find a new owner but unfortunately we were not able to find a suitable one and had to shut down the product in April of 2026.

Huge thanks to Pawel Lukasiewicz who has joined the journey of deadend.ai very early on as a Founding Engineer and has been instrumental in getting the product launched.
